Tendonitis (also called tendinosus or tendinopathy) is an inflammation or irritation of a tendon—a thick cord that attaches bone to muscle.
What causes tendonitis?
Tendonitis is most frequently caused by repetitive, minor impact on the affected area or from a sudden and more serious injury. Activities that can cause tendonitis include:
- Carpentry
- Gardening
- Golf
- Painting
- Running
- Scrubbing
- Tennis
- Throwing and pitching
- Typing
- Skiing
- Using a computer mouse
- And more
What are symptoms of tendonitis?
The symptoms of tendonitis include tendon pain that may gradually build up or become sudden and severe—especially if calcium deposits are present. Other symptoms of tendonitis include loss of motion.
How is tendonitis treated?
Avoiding activities that aggravate the problem, resting the injured area, icing the painful area the day of the injury or by taking anti-inflammatory medication, can treat tendonitis. If your tendonitis doesn’t improve in a week, contact the experts at Spine and Sports Chiropractic in Lincoln. We frequently see patients with severe tendonitis who are able to make full recoveries by administering Active Release Therapy (ART), physical rehabilitation stretches and exercises, home stretching regiments and ergonomic adjustments. In few cases, the physicians at Spine and Sports will utilize oral steroids, splints and braces, corticosteroid injections and in some cases patients will be referred out for surgery to correct their tendonitis.
Did you know?
As tendons age they tolerate less stress and they become less elastic, making them easier to tear. That’s why tendonitis is the most common among adults who are 40 years or older.
